Driving from Florida, my 2012 Kia optima engine seized up. The warning light only came on after I heard those clunking sound from the engine and then engine died. I had towed to the nearest Kia dealer in Nc.,they said I need a new engine because engine seized up due to oil sludge . I had the oil change before the trip how could that be possible, that I have to put in 2 quartz of oil on the way back before engine stalled., their engine burns oil that causes all these internal problem. My 2012 optima has only71,000 mls. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 has 140,000 mls already but still runs like new. Kia refused to honor their warranty and blame all the cause to the consumers.

2013 Kia Optima, 44k miles, seized while driving 50 mph. I had enough momentum to get to the side of the road. Had the car towed to nearest Kia dealer. They checked my service history, saw only three dealer oil change records and immediately said the cause was failure to change oil per schedule. I then showed them all my service receipts from my mechanic showing oil changed within Kia mileage requirements, plus purchase receipts for genuine Kia oil filters FROM THEIR DEALERSHIP and Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil from Walmart. One week later, the dealer advised Kia would be replacing the engine with a brand new one, fully covered by warranty. I asked what had caused the problem, the service advisor could not tell me. He said only that my records and receipts showed Kia that I had met my responsibilities and so they would have to meet theirs.

Moral of the story: KEEP RECORDS and follow the manual. Otherwise, you will need legal help to get anywhere.

I have a 2011 Optima. At 85K, the egine seized. Mechanic said bottom fell out. Warranty was 60K (2nd) owner. Kia wouldn't give me the time of day. Changed oil regulary. No reason for this to happen. Had to drop a new motor in. The engine was from KY. I will NEVER buy another KIA. Telling everyone I know to stay away from them. New motor only has a 12K warranty. A JOKE!!!!!

Update to my comment of 1/7/16: Turns out the service advisor and the KIA warranty rep lied, no NEW engine, just a "re-manufactured" engine. Several different stories about the origin of the engine. First they tell me they got it from another local dealer, then from a dealer in Philadelphia, then from a "dedicated re-manufacturing facility." Service records show only "replaced long block".

KIA basically ignoring us at this point. The warranty rep said the case would be escalated to regional. Regional has a rep leaving messages asking if I have any questions or concerns, as if they have no clue of what has transpired. My return calls always end up in voicemail.

Now, for the worst part - After their "warranty" solution, the car died again while idling at a stop sign, less than 400 miles later. The "Best Warranty in the industry" is a sham, plain and simple. They will sell you factory defective materials, then replace it with refurbished factory defective material. As I was typing this comment, KIA regional finally called. Her response was "Under warranty, we are only required to provide re-manufactured parts." My reply? "I know, do the cheapest, minimum solution. Why am I not surprised?"

I would second the comment above. KIA simply builds a very low end product with warranty service to match. I'll walk before I'll buy another.

I own a 2015 Kia Optima with 26,456 miles (my last oil change was at 26,064 miles). While driving at approximately 50mph with my 11 year old daughter in the car the engine seized up, car shut down and interior filled with smoke. I had car towed to Kia as it is still under warranty (as a single mother I bought the car mainly for the great warranty). I was told Kia WOULD NOT fix the vehicle since I could not provide previous oil change receipts. As I started looking I see MANY Kia vehicles with the SAME problem. Surely there is something we can do! I am left with a vehicle payment and no vehicle. It is not right for such a large company to take advantage of us.

I see I'm not the only person dealing with Kia and their engeine issues. I too might have to spend ten thousand dollars to repair their crappy engeine. I too was told it was due to lack of maintenance although I have provided receipts for oil changes. I will be talking with corporate and file as many complaint as possible.

There is currently a class action lawsuit regarding Kia's crappy engine and that they are trying to blame the consumer when they knew there was a problem with the engine. I am currently in the throws of fighting with them because I have oil sludge and need to have my engine replaced. I too am a single mom that cannot afford to pay that kind of money. This is Kia's fault and it is their responsibilty to honor their warranty and fix our engines. I have emailed corporate and next I will be making a phone call. This is absolutely ridiculous that we have to fight for them to fix something that is their problem just becasue they are too cheap and shady to honor their warranty.

Lancy Robinson... I have complained to the BBB and the NHTSA. I got a call from a Kia representative stating they received my complaint and their decision was unchanged. I let her know I am truly worried that someone is going to get hurt when an engine shuts down in traffic or a deserted area. Kia does not care about their customers. If you know of anyone else to complain to or have any luck please let me know! I still have NO resolution.

Laurie...I am so very sorry to hear this. I wish I would have did some research prior to purchasing my car because like you said there are SO many customer complaints (the same complaint with the engine and with Kia's lack of assistance). I used to tell people how much I loved my Kia; now every time I see someone in a Kia I tell them to trade it asap before something goes wrong! If you have any ideas on a way to get them to fix our vehicles let me know! I have spoke to Megan in the escalations department and was told that is as far as I could go, that the decision was final. I did hire a lawyer so we will see.

Good luck to you!

I bought a 2011 Kia OPTIMA in 2015. In February of 2016 motor seized while driving. Spent 3000 dollars to replace the motor with another one with only 60k mile on it. 4 months later that engine seized. Never buying a kia again.

Hi everyone. It seems to me that I'm not the only one whose kia optima 2014 engine failed. They found sludge in the engine and they're asking for the receipts, as a mechanic myself i've done the oil changes for the past 12 months. They won't honor the warranty, so therefore a class action lawsuit needs to be filed. If anyone wants to discuss this furthermore please shoot me an email. To spend 5000$ to 10,000$ on a brand new car while still making the monthly payments and with no car to drive is unacceptable.

Hi, my name is Elvis Cronan. Me and my wife are having the same problem with our 2011 Kia Optima, it has 76,000 miles. They are saying the bottom end came apart and are asking for our service records. They say if we can show our service records and it has been done like it was supposed to be then they will replace engine at no cost to us. But after reading these threads I'm hoping we get lucky and they actually do what they say. We got the call today saying that it would be covered if we could prove correct servicing, that won't be an issue so I will let everyone know what happens. If anyone knows of a class action lawsuit against Kia regarding there crappy engines please let me know so I can get involved.

Thanks, Elvis Cronan.

My engine just blew 2 nights ago with no warning signs at all. No lights. No smoke. Nothing. I just had my oil changed a month ago. I have 40k miles on it. It was a dark main road with my daughter in the car. The dealer made like it was no big deal. I was completely shocked. I had no idea Kia engines had issues. Reading all your comments I'm praying they cover it. If not I want in on any lawsuits.

Thanks, Debbie Nuzzi

Daughter took her 2013 Kia Optima into Spitzer Kia, a local Kia dealership in Cleveland, Ohio. When she picked it up, the told her everything looked good and thank you for coming in. She pulled away and she said all she saw in rearview mirror was smoke. She took the car back and the same service manager that told her everything looks good, takes the car in the service area and then comes out to tell her that she has sludge and she didnt change her oil enough. She needs a new engine. They didnt open up the oil pan or crankcase. they looked inside of her oil fill and said "sludge, it your fault". They tried to flush out the engine but that didnt work. Seeing all these complaints tells me, this isnt right. we will persue other recourses..

We have a Kia Sportage that this exact same thing happened. They blamed the engine seizing on oil changes. So we bought what was suppose to be a new engine for $5000.00, for a full block replacement, only to find out it was a refurbished engine, that seized up on us once in the mountains 4 days after getting it back from service. So they said
replaced the lower block, under warranty, and after 4 weeks it seized again. They are coming over today to have the car towed to their dealership. This is unbelievable. All I heard from the service manager at the dealership is how much money this is costing them to repair???? My suggestion was to fix it right the first time......They make very poor engines and I would never, ever buy a kia again.....if there is a class action suit I would love to join in...there is a lot more to this story, which is the reason why they are making sure they fix the car.

Yes Kia told me the same thing. Even with extended warranty from 2 sources and i am still out of pocket plus carnote. I had my oil changed 3 weeks b4 the problem and the oil change didnt say another about sludge which they would have said. Smh. Yes nice car but bad engine work which kia see all the people problems. It not always the people fault. Thats what paying extra money for warranties is for

In 2011, I bought a brand new Kia Optima. All was well for the first 2 years. Into the 3 year, my battery died. Ok no problem. Replace the battery! Then the ignition switch malfunctioned and the car wouldn't start (push button). Towed to dealer and they replaced it under warranty. Next the alternator went out. Towed to dealer and they replace it under warranty. The final straw was when something was going wrong with the passenger front end that caused the car to shake at high speeds. I needed to have my oil changed so while the shop was changing the oil, I asked them if they could check out the front end. I was told they'd needed to drop the bottom engine cover to look. Told them nevermind I was leaving there and going to Kia. I marched in there and basically told them they needed to take the car back or I would seek legal council. They convinced me to trade the 2011 Optima in for a 2014 Optima and would ensure my remaining balance on the loan would be paid in full. Not wanting to take the 2011 Optima to another dealership like say Toyota knowing they would give me less than I owed on the car. I didn't want to be upside down so I agreed to take the 2014 Optima. Now here it is 3 years later, and I have the transmission replaced under warranty (the warranty for that is on 12 mths/12k miles (pretty messed up if you ask me), the A/C compressor replaced under warranty and just last week the engine died mid intersection on a major highway. I have it towed to Kia only to find out the engine seized and needed replacing. They ask me to fax them all my receipts for the oil changes. Thankfully only one shop has ever changed my oil on both the 2011 and 2014 Optima so it was super easy to get copies. The service manager said he would submit all the paperwork and pics of the engine to Kia for approval to get the engine replaced under warranty. He also told me there was no sludge in the when they took off the valve cover and he didn't see any metal shavings so perhaps it was "just a bad motor". Kia came back to say they would replace the engine under warranty (37k miles) and would warranty the engine to 10 yrs/120k miles (original warranty). Sounds great right?! He then tells me the engine is on back order and he had no idea when I would have my car back. WTF Kia??? I can't get rid of the car b/c I owe 18k and KBB says the trade in value is only 9500.00. I will never buy another Kia!! They've lost my business forever! Sad part is I love/loved driving the Optima. Very disappointed! Thankfully the gentleman at Greico Kia (Delray Beach, FL) has been awesome! He was upfront and honest with me each and every time I've had an issue. Though the first time we met, I let him know then that I had extensive knowledge about cars and simply wouldn't tolerate any BS! (Who says women can't stand up for themselves with regards to the automotive industry... lol) I just wished I'd done more research before I bought the second Optima. Shame on me for not doing my homework. Now I just wonder what will break next?!?!?! It's not a matter of if but when!!

My daughter bought a 2011 KIA Optima in April 2016 (now has 125,000 miles on it) from a nice young man whose mom also had a KIA just like it and they told us this was their 2nd round of KIAs and they loved them. She is in college and drives home regularly (180 miles roundtrip), so we have made sure to keep the oil changed. She had he oil changed last Friday and on Sunday she was driving approximately 55 MPH and the car shut down. We just found out today that the engine seized up and the mechanic advised there were metal shavings in the engine when he removed the throttle body. It doesn't sound like anyone is having any luck reporting the problems to KIA, but I'm going to call tomorrow and see what they say. My daughter is an 18-year-old college student and doesn't have the money to replace the engine or buy a different car. This problem needs to be taken care of by KIA!!

Unknown said...

They will deny the claim. Unfortunately your daughter is outside the extended warranty (120k miles). They should've did a recall rather than extending the engine warranty. I wish you all the luck in contacting them tomorrow! Start gathering every oil change receipt every performed on the car, otherwise they will absolutely tell you there's nothing they can do.

I too am having a problem with my KIA Optima! I have 22,000 miles on my 2015. I heard clicking noise while driving in Indiana on the highway. Tried to get to the nearest KIA dealer. It was in Merriville, Indiana, but the car stopped on Interstate 65. Got it towed to the KIA dealer. They told me that there was a hole in the engine, and I needed a new one. I am a retiree and only have a pension that everything comes out of, including healthcare. Because I could not produce the oil change information, KIA said too bad! I was stranded in Indiana. I am from a Chicago, IL. I found someone to get me back to Chicago. I am alone, and can't get help from anyone. I am on a walker and need my car, but I don't have the money to pay for a new engine. It is still under warranty, but KIA doesn't want to honor it., so I am paying for a car that Is undrivable. Where can I get help, not from KIA!!

Unknown said...

I'm so sorry Patricia. You're only savior is those oil change receipts. Without them, you're dead in the water. I got lucky (for lack of better words) in that I had all my oil change receipts. I grew up and worked in automotive and have always known the importance of receipts with regards to recalls and defect in cars. If I had more time in my life, I'd create a "all women" blog about cars and how to protect yourselves against automotive ppl.. but to be honest even if I had a popular blog about women and cars today, I'd never been able to predict nor protect anyone against what Kia is and has done. Simply makes me angry and less trusting of all auto makers. The industry is not what it once was.. Every greedy person for themselves I suppose unfortunately.

I had a 2012 Kia Optima bought it brand new. In the Fall of 2013 motor failure. I had it towed to the Kia Dealership where the headache began. Said it was due to my lack of maintenance because I didnt do my maintenance at dealearship. I am not driving 100miles to closest dealership to get my oil changed when I can drive 15-20 & get it changed for a few dollars cheaper. I turned my records into delearship. When I hady first phone conversation with rep from kia they said denied reason not producing records of oil changes. When told them I did they said well we check into that but decision will probably not be overturned. Months later multiple people later they kept saying couldnt overturn denial due to I didnt turn in records in an adequate time manner. Because their records still showed they werent recieved in corporate office until months after claim, which was because of dealership not me but there records didnt state that. I would once again get told well let me look into that & months would go by & I would be calling and calling to get run around & talk to someone else. I am a single mother barely making the payments as it was that lives in rural Oklahoma and has drive 20miles to work everyday. I couldnt afford another car and make payments on a car I cant drive. On top of that my Kia had been at delearship this whole time and they started sending me storage bills. Bank finally came and repoed it and I am still trying to make small monthly payments to collection company on it. What does this recall do for me, how does it help someone in my case? Anyone that has incormation on a lawsuit I can join or advice on what I can do to help get justice please let me know.

Reviewing the comments here, it appears the problem engine is the GDI 2.4L found in all but the two top models of Optima (they have a 2L). The problem most commonly presents itself when the engine seizes, usually at low highway speed. The manufacturer appears to consistently diagnose the cause as poor maintenance (oil changes) and will dispute customer claims of maintenance done by any mechanic, oil change companies or personally ... any service that is not KIA causes problems according to them. They claim evidence of poor maintenance is "sludge" in the oil pan which the observe via a dipstick check. The problem seems to be handled this way across North America, so it is unlikely that it is a result of a poor policy interpretation by certain regional representatives. It is likely a reflection of the manufacturer's policy. This makes it ripe for class action pile on KIA in both the US and Canada.

Is anyone reading this aware of Class Actions against KIA based on the poor performance of their 2.4L engine?

Kia has since issued a recall on the engines. They'll replace it under warranty with a reman engine. Doesn't do much for the diminished value sadly enough.

Federal regulators want to know why it took Hyundai and Kia 18 months to recall nearly 1.2 million vehicles that may have the same engine defect that resulted in an earlier recall of 470,000 sedans.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Hyundai and Kia’s handling of the recalls affecting a total of 1.6 million vehicles that could experience engine failure while on the road.

According to the NHTSA investigation notices for Hyundai [PDF] and Kia [PDF], the agency is looking to address the timeliness and scope of the carmakers’ “Theta II” engine recalls, and their compliance with reporting such issues.

Hyundai first recalled 470,000 model year 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Sonata vehicles equipped with a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection engine in Sept. 2015, determining that cars may contain metallic debris that was not fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft.

The carmaker said that if debris remains, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage and possible engine failure.

At the time, the company said the recall was limited to vehicles produced on or prior to April 12, 2012, stating that a process change in April 2012 resolved the issue of manufacturing debris.

Despite this, Hyundai and Kia revised the recall in April 2017 adding nearly 1.2 million additional vehicles.

In all the recall now covers:
• 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata
• 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport
• 2011-2014 Kia Optima
• 2012-2014 Kia Sorento
• 2011-2013 Sportage

According to a chronology [PDF] submitted along with the March 2017 recall, the carmakers note that they began investigating the issue after Hyundai’s initial recall.

Kia said that after learning of Hyundai’s initial recall it checked its Theta engine manufacturing process for the Optima, determining there were different procedures and no issues. After finding that warranty and field claims were “extremely low” the decision was made to take no action.

However, in early 2016, Kia learned of recently returned engines and of Hyundai’s warranty extension program for the Sonata. In May 2016, the carmaker analyzed field data finding a slight increase in warranty claims, leaving it to extend warranty programs.

Two months later, the company found an increase in Theta engine claims for some vehicles, once again leading it to expanded warranty programs.

Between Dec. 2016 and March 2017, the carmaker continued analyzing data related to the vehicles, noticing a slight increase in warranty claims. It then eventually determined a recall was necessary.

I have a 2011 Optima. At 100,000 miles the engine died and I had to purchase a new engine. Fast forward a little over 2 years and I receive the recall notice on the engine. A couple of weeks after I receive the notice, my car died leaving work and the engine light came on again with a brand new engine. I had to be towed home and the shop had my car for about two weeks. So, there is $400 on a rental. Then, two weeks after that the light came on AGAIN. I am in a rental again and my car is back in the shop. I still owe over 6,000 and it is not worth even close to that amount. This car is a piece of crap and I DON'T want it anymore. I am paying for a car that I can't drive.
